On the Spot
Hobbies: Listening to music on my iPod; I love driving and have five cars back in Karachi and my favourite is a Honda Oriel VTI. I love motorway driving in England.
Favourite Movie(s): Hindi movies mostly, though I don’t have a special or favourite one. I enjoy all of them.
Favourite Movie Star: Amitabh Bachchan.
Favourite Music Act(s): Hindi music. I like Lata Mangeshkar and Udit Narayan mostly.
Favourite Food: Chicken Biryani and barbeque.
Favourite Drink: Orange Juice.
Favourite Holiday Destination: Switzerland. I haven’t been there but would love to go. I also like New Zealand.
Favourite Ground: National Stadium in Karachi, because it is home; and the Melbourne Cricket Ground and Sydney Cricket Ground, as my name is on the honours board at both of them!
Least Favourite Ground: Anywhere my team has lost and where I have bowled badly.
Most Memorable Match: The Third Test against India in Bangalore in March 2005. We were desperate to win and draw the series 1-1 and we did just that. I took five wickets in the first innings and the last two in the second to give Pakistan victory.
Match You Most Want to Forget: The First Test against West Indies (in May 2005 and the next Test after Bangalore) in Barbados when we lost by 276 runs. We played very badly and I didn’t enjoy it but I did bowl Brian Lara out, even if it was for 130. Another bad memory is Essex vs Lancashire at Old Trafford (in July 2005). I bowled 70 overs in their first innings and had figures of 0-208!
Your Cricket Heroes: Brian Lara, Wasim Akram and Abdul Qadir. Abdul was my idol, but I haven’t worked with him.
Greatest Influence: My Uncle, Cowas Mulla. He’s actually my father’s best friend and my Godfather. He helped me a lot.
Toughest Opponent: Brian Lara. I really like to watch him bat and it was great to bowl to him in the West Indies. I learnt a lot bowling to him. I asked him if he would sign my shirt after the series and he wrote on it: ‘Best bowler’, which I thought was very generous of him.
Best Friend in Cricket: I like everybody.
Funniest Man in Cricket: Billy Bowden. Maybe I shouldn’t say that as he won’t give me any more lbw’s!
Funniest Men in the World: Johnny Lever, Kardar Khan and Mr. Bean.
Most Embarrassing Moment: That Lancashire match: 0-208 is pretty embarrassing.
If You Weren’t a Cricketer…: I would be working in an office. Some kind of business but I don’t know what; maybe something to do with sport.
